Docklands Volleyball bounced back from last week's
National Cup semi-final defeat to almost secure the
National League division two title with two games
to spare. Docklands opponents, Sussex, had to endure
the brunt of Docklands' frustration at just missing
out on the cup final and couldn't match the league
leader's power and precision play.
The
first set followed a similar pattern to previous games
this season with Docklands establishing a good sideout
rhythm in the early stages of the set before pulling
away from their opponents towards the end. In fact,
Docklands did not get out of second gear as they took
the first set 25-17.
However,
the ease with which LDV won the first set seemed to
cause a momentary lapse in concentration as the home
side took an early 8-2 lead in the second set. However,
after a stern talking to in an early time-out by Docklands
coach Ian Legrand the visitors pulled it back
to 9-9. With strong blocking by Blake and Slitti
in the middle and exceptional back court agility from
Marshman, LDV were able to take the crucial
points, and close out the second set.
Legrand
then used what turned out to be the final set as a
chance to give court time to Danny Primus,
who has just returned from a long-term injury. Primus
rose to the challenge, showing glimpses of his undoubted
talent and it was a cluster of his strong tactical
serves that enabled Docklands to pull out an insurmountable
lead. The crowd was also given a rare opportunity
to see Docklands' Italian outside hitter, Fabio
Fant. He did not disappoint, giving one of his
usual enthusiastic displays.
LDV's
weekend was capped by the shock news that their closest
rivals Leeds had lost to bottom team Gateshead. This
means that victory against RAF Harriers next weekend
in LDV's last home game of the season will ensure
that the London team will be crowned division 2 champions
with one game to spare.
Next
home game Saturday 24th March 2.30pm at Bacon's College,
Rotherhithe.
